140 First Avenue
Cambridge, MA
Having just acquired this property into their portfolio, Alexandria approached LEMON BROOKE looking for an updated and more useful setting for this leased life science building. Originally built several decades ago, the space has an existing courtyard structure and many mature trees that were preserved and shaped the overall project. Taking the approach that "less is more" the courtyard was transformed from a collection of planting beds and pathways into a cohesive open space with abundant seating all along the edges. With places to gather in the sun or the shade, at picnic tables or on lounge chairs, alone or with a group, the project invites people in from both the building and the sidewalk, to visit. A large central green space offers rest for the eye (a place for the rain water too), and the custom shade trellis offers a sense of intimate space, perfect for lunchtime meetings and after-work conversations.
