Mill Valley Residence

Mill Valley, California

This 5,000-square-foot house in Mill Valley was designed as a home for an empty-nest couple. The site was the inspiration for the landscape design: vast views of Mt. Tamalpais, intimate connections to groves of redwood trees, and a steep incline. Given its location, the home was separated into three levels, stepping up the hillside between redwoods. The upper level opens onto a pool area; the mid-level onto a lawn and patio area; and the lower level onto gardens and a redwood grove. As the building steps up the hillside it also extends into the landscape using exposed concrete for most site elements.
