Old Colony Montessori School
Hingham, Massachusetts
The Old Colony Montessori School has held a special place in the consciousness of the South Shore community of Hingham for a long time. School administration and parents were looking to solve some practical access problems as well as find a way for their site to reflect the hands-on philosophical direction for which the school was so well known and respected.
LEMON BROOKE worked with a team of teachers, classroom support staff, parents, and administration to develop a program that could be implemented in phases over time as priorities dictated and as the funds became available. Organized bi-laterally, with a preschool at one end of the property and the elementary school at the other, a connector path became the essential organizing element around which opportunities for play and exploration were built. Integral to how children at the school learn is independent choice-making, a strategy that is supported by the development of two new spaces, an outdoor sport court and shade trellis that serve to identify the school for visitors, and an outdoor classroom adjacent to a wetland where students are immersed in a natural, sensory rich environment.
